그들이 예루살렘에 들어가니라 예수께서 성전에 들어가사 성전 안에서 매매하는 자들을 내쫓으시며 돈 바꾸는 자들의 상과 비둘기 파는 자들의 의자를 넘어뜨리시며 아무나 기구를 가지고 성전 안으로 지나다님을 허락하지 아니하시고 이에 가르쳐 이르시되 기록된 바 내 집은 만민이 기도하는 집이라 칭함을 받으리라고 하지 아니하였느냐 너희는 강도의 소굴을 만들었도다 하시매 대제사장들과 서기관들이 듣고 예수를 어떻게 죽일까 하고 꾀하니 이는 무리가 다 그의 교훈을 놀랍게 여기므로 그를 두려워함일러라

성전은 하나님을 만나고 기도하는 거룩한 공간입니다. 그러나 편의와 이익을 위한 장사와 형식적 종교 행위가 그 자리를 차지하자, 하나님께 나아가는 길은 막히게 되었습니다. 예수님은 권위를 가지고 성전을 정화하시며, 예배의 본질과 하나님과의 관계를 선포하셨습니다.

"기도하는 집"이라는 말씀은 성전의 본래 목적을 상기시킵니다. 그러나 "강도의 소굴"이 되었다는 책망은, 종교가 사람들을 하나님께 인도하는 대신 오히려 걸림돌이 되었음을 보여줍니다. 예수님의 정화 사역은 하나님을 다시 만날 수 있게 하는 회복의 시작입니다.

여름이면 수련회가 생각납니다. 바닦에 앉아 덥고 좁아도 하나님의 은혜는 뜨거운 찬양과 감사의 예배 속에 서로 섬기고 축복함 속에서 하나님을 만났습니다. 습관적 기도, 형식적 예배, 내 유익을 위한 신앙이 하나님을 만나는 길을 막고 있지는 않은지 돌아봐야 합니다. 하나님과의 만남을 위한 나만의 예배와 기도의 장소가 필요합니다. 그곳에 화장실이든 자동차 안이든 일터나 거리에서도 하나님은 함께 하십니다.

주님, 저의 신앙이 형식과 편의에 머물지 않고 주님을 진정으로 만나는 예배자가 되게 하소서. 습관에 가려진 본질을 회복하게 하시고, 오늘 하루 온 마음으로 주님께 나아가는 기도의 시간과 장소를 갖게 하소서. 내 삶이 주님을 향한 예배의 자리에서 주님과 동행하게 하소서. 아멘

​"On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, 'Is it not written: "My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations"? But you have made it a "den of robbers."' The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching."

​The temple is a sacred space meant for encountering God and engaging in prayer. However, when commerce for the sake of convenience and profit, along with formalistic religious acts, took over, the path to approaching God became blocked. With divine authority, Jesus cleansed the temple and proclaimed the essence of worship and our relationship with God.  

​The phrase "a house of prayer" serves as a reminder of the temple's original purpose. Conversely, the rebuke that it had become a "den of robbers" shows that religion had become a stumbling block instead of leading people to God. Jesus’ act of cleansing is the beginning of the restoration that allows us to meet God once again.

​Summer often brings back memories of retreats. Even in hot, cramped spaces sitting on the floor, we encountered God through fervent praise, grateful worship, and the act of serving and blessing one another. We must reflect on whether habitual prayer, formal worship, or a faith centered on self-interest is blocking our way to meeting God. We need our own "sacred space" for prayer and encounter. Whether it be a restroom, a car, a workplace, or the street—God is present with us there.

​Lord, let my faith not settle for mere formality and convenience, but help me become a true worshiper who genuinely encounters You. Restore the essence that has been obscured by habit, and grant me the time and place to come before You with all my heart today. May my life be a place of worship where I walk daily with You. Amen.
